Terms of Use
Last updated October 5, 2026
Launch notice: required operator details are incomplete. Connected accounts and paid billing remain disabled until configuration and legal review are complete.
These Terms are an agreement between you and [operator legal name required], the operator of Northstar Budget. By creating a workspace or accepting version 2026-10-05, you agree to these Terms and the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the service; you may contact us to request deletion without accepting a later update.
1. Operator and contact
- Legal name: [operator legal name required]
- Address: [business address required]
- Email: [support email required]
2. Eligibility and account security
You must be at least 18, able to enter a binding contract, and use the service only for yourself or an organization that authorized you. Provide accurate information, protect your sign-in factors and recovery methods, enable multi-factor authentication where available, and promptly report suspected unauthorized access. You are responsible for activity performed through your account unless applicable law provides otherwise.
3. The service
Northstar is a personal financial organization and forecasting tool. Features may include manual records, imports, budgets, reports, reminders, encrypted backups, optional subscriptions, and optional connections to supported financial institutions. We may improve, add, remove, or suspend features, but will not use a change to avoid obligations already owed to you.
Northstar is not a bank, payment service, investment adviser, credit bureau, accountant, lawyer, or tax adviser. It cannot initiate transfers or control funds. Calculations, forecasts, reminders, and imported provider data may be incomplete, delayed, or inaccurate. Verify material information with the relevant institution and obtain qualified advice before acting.
4. Connected and third-party services
If connected accounts are enabled, you authorize Plaid and Northstar to retrieve and process the accounts and data you select until you revoke access. Institution and product coverage is determined by the provider. Clerk, Vercel, Neon, Plaid, Stripe, Resend, and linked sites are independent services with their own terms. We are responsible for our selection and use of processors as required by law, but do not control an institution's data accuracy or a third party's separate service.
5. Subscriptions, renewal, cancellation, and refunds
Before checkout, Northstar will present the plan, price, currency, taxes or other charges, billing frequency, renewal terms, cancellation method, and any material limits. You will have a chance to review and correct the order before accepting it, and Stripe will provide an electronic confirmation. Paid subscriptions renew for the stated period until cancelled through the billing portal. Cancellation stops future renewal and access ordinarily continues through the paid period. When Pro access ends, the oldest connected institution remains under the Free plan and additional institutions are disconnected and their provider access is revoked; previously imported transactions remain until you delete them.
Except where a displayed offer says otherwise, fees already charged are non-refundable to the extent permitted by law. This does not limit statutory cancellation, refund, chargeback, or other rights. Nothing in these Terms waives rights under Alberta's Consumer Protection Act or other mandatory consumer law, and no dispute is forced into arbitration where law prohibits that restriction.
Deleting your Northstar account cancels future subscription renewal and ends Pro access immediately as part of permanent account closure. Account deletion does not itself create a refund, except where required by law.
6. Your content and licence
You keep ownership of information you provide. You grant Northstar a limited, non-exclusive licence to host, copy, process, display, transmit, and create calculations from that information only as needed to operate, secure, support, and comply with law for the service. The licence ends when the information is deleted, subject to reasonable backup rotation and required retention.
The Northstar software, branding, interface, and documentation are owned by the operator or its licensors. We grant you a limited, revocable, non-transferable right to use the service for lawful personal purposes while these Terms apply.
7. Acceptable use
Do not access another person's records; submit data you lack authority to use; bypass authentication, rate limits, or provider consent; probe or exploit vulnerabilities without written authorization; introduce malware; scrape or overload the service; reverse engineer where prohibited; misrepresent institution ownership; or use Northstar for unlawful, fraudulent, discriminatory, or abusive activity.
8. Suspension and ending use
You may stop using Northstar, export your information, disconnect providers, cancel billing, or delete your account at any time. We may restrict or suspend access when reasonably necessary to address a security threat, abuse, non-payment, provider restriction, or legal requirement. Where practical, we will provide notice and an opportunity to export or correct the issue. Provisions that by nature should survive—including ownership, required payment, disclaimers, limits, and disputes—continue after termination.
9. Disclaimers and liability
To the extent permitted by law, Northstar is provided "as is" and "as available" without implied warranties of uninterrupted availability, fitness for a particular purpose, or error-free provider data. We do not disclaim warranties or remedies that cannot legally be excluded.
To the extent permitted by law, the operator will not be liable for indirect, special, incidental, punitive, or consequential loss, lost profits, or financial decisions based on estimates, missed reminders, provider outages, or inaccurate third-party data. For claims that may lawfully be limited, aggregate liability will not exceed the greater of CAD $100 or the fees you paid Northstar in the 12 months before the event. These limits do not apply to fraud, wilful misconduct, gross negligence, breach of privacy obligations where a limit is prohibited, or any liability that applicable law does not allow us to restrict.
10. Governing law, disputes, and changes
These Terms are governed by the laws of Alberta, Canada, without limiting mandatory rights in your home jurisdiction. Courts located in Alberta have non-exclusive jurisdiction. Before filing a claim, contact us and allow 30 days for a good-faith attempt to resolve it, unless urgent relief or a limitation period requires faster action.
We may update these Terms for legal, security, provider, or product changes. We will identify the new date and version and request renewed acceptance for material changes before financial features continue. Changes do not retroactively reduce rights already accrued.
